How to make an ancestry wall and paint an ancestry tree in just a few steps.
If you follow me on Facebook, you know February is Family History month at Je Revele. Each week, I will be sharing some helpful tips including:
- how to preserve your family history
- how to create a family tree
- how to document family history
- how to collect your own folk lore
- how to interview relatives & much much more
I love pinterest, and recently discovered these beautiful painted family trees. I think they’re an incredible way to display portraits of several generations of your family. I love looking at old photos and learning about my ancestors. I believe portraits hung on walls instills the love of a family and their values.
Your ancestry tree is your visual family history.
How can you find out who all your ancestors are?
Ancestry.com is a great tool to find out who your parents, parents are. Who your parents, grandparents are and so on. I’ve been looking on ancestry.com for my family dating back three generations. I’m close to finding everyone I possibly can find. Winter is the perfect time to start a family project.
Have you ever be curious how to create and paint an ancestry tree?
Photo & Art created by the talented Jaime Lowrie
Jaime Lowrie, is a very talented artist. She shared a project she did for her mother. When I asked how she created this ancestry tree, she said “I used a pencil to outline it, and used acrylic craft paints. I used a lot of sponge brushes. I have step-by-step pictures I can send you.”
Here are some of the step-by-step photos of Jaime’s ancestry tree.
What if you want to digitize and enlarge an old photo?
I’ve had several people ask me how to enlarge an old photo. In fact, my mother brought me a few older photos to use in our family tree, but some are too small. I’m going to photograph the old photo to enlarge it (to 8×10) without losing the quality. Photoshop gives me the chance to sharpen the photo, if necessary. Here’s a great article how to scan/photograph and enlarge family photos: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/22726/what-is-the-best-way-to-digitize-old-photographs-for-preservation
I hope you enjoyed this helpful post. Thank you again Jaime, for sharing these step-by-step photos.

Giving Thanks | A New Jersey Family Photographer
–
I want to post an early Thanksgiving message to THANK all of our clients this year and in prior years. There are a lot of photographers out there and the fact that our work stood out enough for you to choose us means the world to me.
My friend Lynn Cartia said it best:
“People hire a photographer because they want to remember a moment in time.
They hire a photographer because they know their child (or they) will never look like this again.
They hire a photographer because they know that it’s been ten years since their family was together last
and they don’t know when the next time will be.
They hire a photographer when they are uniting two hearts into one.
Simply put, they hire a photographer because what they want photographed is important to them.”

Photography is one of the few tangible items that remain long after your children are grown. So many things in life will be gone and long forgotten, but pictures remain forever.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for a great year. I wish you all a healthy & happy holiday season.

CREATING PERSONALIZED ART FOR THE HOME
As a family photographer, you’d guess that I have portraits of my family displayed all over my home. Well you’re correct, I do.
Plus I have many gorgeous, smiling images of my kids, beautifully preserved in fine leather albums in my family room plus an image box on our dining room table.
If you walked through my home, you’d see I simply prefer fine art pieces. To me, it’s like living within a story.
This might sound rather unsentimental as an interior design choice for a parent, but it’s actually quite the contrary.
Fine art moves me — especially when it’s a piece I commission of my own family.
During the Winter 2011, I had one of my favorite family shoots with my children. At the time, it was just my two daughters. My son was born in 2013.
Not only are these portraits, a time in my children’s life. But it shows their relationship as sisters. Something I never experienced having two brothers myself.
As I walk up my staircase every day, I look fondly at those memories. My girls were so young.
Art is an expression of oneself.
Art tells the stories we cannot tell.
Art makes sense of things when nothing else makes sense.
Art brings immeasurable joy.
Art brings acceptance.
Art heals.
Art brings in the light and gives it a shape.
Art never apologizes, but it always forgives.
Art does things for us that we cannot do for ourselves.
Art can outlive us all.
Art preserves.
I’ll always remember this portrait below of my daughter who would not allow me to photograph her. Like most children, they just want to run around carefree. Thank goodness my cousin Austin was there to help me.As an artist, I’ve begun a personal journey to create this highly personal form of family storytelling in my own home.
I shoot with a purpose and a tale to tell.
I try to convey our family history in some extraordinary way, so that our children and their children will be able to retell it. And that’s what makes up a legacy.
More than beautiful pictures, these museum-quality, archival mounted images are there to make us feel deeply… and daily.
Do you have a story to tell? We can help you visualize and capture your family’s story in fine art. Give us a call. There’s a legacy waiting to be created!

A 4th of July Message from Je Revele: a NJ Family Photographer
by Natalie Licini, NJ Family Photographer
As we celebrate Independence Day on this cool fourth of July, I look back on 2014 with gratitude for the many amazing clients new and old who have come to Je Revele. Many who have become dear friends!
As I sit here, my mind wanders and I find myself thinking of new resolutions for myself, my family and my business. Especially as I embark upon the second half of the year, I look back and wonder: Did I accomplish what I hoped so far? Is my path different, better or worse? What are my hopes and dreams the rest of the year?
And as much as I may want to plan my life, it has a way of sometimes surprising me with unexpected things that make me stop in my tracks. After the scare in April with my four year old Andrea, my life was charted on a different course. My family, my children, my experiences and relationships shifted. All good things, by some miracle. I’m working a bit less these days. I’m having fun photographing my kids. Somehow that lessened over the last few years.
I’m enjoying these moments with my family. I’m grateful for everything this year, especially the health of my kiddies.
As we head into the second part of the year, I want to thank all our amazing Je Revele clients from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for letting us in and allowing us to be a teeny part of your life with your family. It is always such a great honor. I want to take a moment to make special mention of one person. On July 19th, I had the privilege of photographing a truly remarkable and accomplished young woman just a few years out of college. With life challenges few could handle at any age, never mind her age, she was such a breath of fresh air and left me inspired and grateful. She was such a bright light and a brilliant woman. I will cherish meeting her and hope she had an unforgettable day with us.
Lots of love to you ALL on this joyous fourth of July.
~Natalie
